Salt-Tolerant Plants for Coastal Carolina Landscapes

May 30, 2026

Salt-tolerant native plantings around a coastal home

Why plant choice matters on the coast

Salt air, wind, sandy soil, and intense sun limit what survives long-term. Choosing the right palette saves replacement cost, water, and labor — and looks better through summer storms.

Best native picks for salt air

Sea oats, yaupon holly, wax myrtle, beach grass, lantana, muhly grass, and Indian hawthorn. These tolerate salt spray, hold sandy soil, and stay attractive year-round with minimal water.

What to avoid

Most fruit trees, classic hydrangeas, boxwoods, and high-water-demand turf species struggle within a few hundred yards of the surf. They look fine for a season, then decline.

Mulching and irrigation

Pine straw or hardwood mulch holds moisture and reduces salt deposition on roots. Irrigation should run early morning, not midday, and never with overhead sprinklers in salt-air zones.
